Suatu seruan mempersatukan dunia ....

Prinsip belas kasih tersemat dalam jiwa semua tradisi agama, etika atau kerohanian, dan menyeru kepada kita untuk selalu memperlakukan orang lain sebagaimana yang kita ingin diperlakukan. Belas kasih memaksa kita bekerja tanpa kenal lelah untuk menghapuskan penderitaan sesama manusia. Dan untuk melepaskan kepentingan kedudukan kita demi kebaikan dan kesejahteraan orang lain, serta untuk menghormati kesucian tak terganggu-gugat setiap orang, memperlakukan setiap orang dengan keadilan, kesamaan dan rasa hormat yang mutlak, tanpa pengecualian.

Adalah juga penting dalam kehidupan masyarakat dan perorangan untuk terus-menerus menahan diri secara konsisten dan empatik dari tindakan menyakiti orang lain. Bertindak dan berkata-kata kasar karena rasa dendam, kesombongan bangsa, atau kepentingan diri, untuk mengurangkan, mengekploitasi atau menyangkal hak asasi siapa pun dan menghasut kebencian melalui fitnah – bahkan terhadap musuh pun– adalah suatu penyangkalan terhadap kemanusiaan bersama. Kami mengaku bahwa kami telah gagal hidup berbelas kasih dan malahan ada juga yang menambah penderitaan sesama manusia atas nama agama.

Oleh itu kami menyeru kepada semua orang, laki-laki dan perempuan, supaya ~ menghidupkan kembali perasaan belas kasih sebagai asas etika dan agama ~ untuk kembali kepada prinsip asali bahwa setiap tafsiran Kitab Suci yang melahirkan kekerasan, kebencian atau penghinaan, adalah tidak sah ~ untuk menjamin kaum muda diberi informasi yang tepat dan menghargai tradisi, agama dan kebudayaan lain ~ untuk mendorong penghargaan yang positif terhadap kepelbagaian budaya dan agama ~ untuk menyemai empati atas penderitaan semua umat manusia – termasuk mereka yang dianggap musuh.

Kita sangat perlu menjadikan belas kasih sebagai suatu kekuatan yang jelas, bercahaya dan dinamik dalam dunia kita yang terpolarisasi. Berakar dalam tekad mendasar untuk mengatasi keakuan, belas kasih dapat meruntuhkan batas-batas politik, dogmatik, ideologis dan keagamaan. Lahir dari ketergantungan kita yang mendalam antara satu dengan yang lain, belas kasih adalah esensil bagi hubungan antara manusia dan untuk menggenapi kemanusiaan. Belas kasih adalah jalan ke pencerahan, dan tak dapat diabaikan dalam menciptakan suatu ekonomi yang adil dan suatu kehidupan global bersama yang damai.

Charter for Compassion



A call to bring the world together…

The principle of compassion lies at the heart of all religious, ethical and spiritual traditions, calling us always to treat all others as we wish to be treated ourselves. Compassion impels us to work tirelessly to alleviate the suffering of our fellow creatures, to dethrone ourselves from the centre of our world and put another there, and to honour the inviolable sanctity of every single human being, treating everybody, without exception, with absolute justice, equity and respect.

It is also necessary in both public and private life to refrain consistently and empathically from inflicting pain. To act or speak violently out of spite, chauvinism, or self-interest, to impoverish, exploit or deny basic rights to anybody, and to incite hatred by denigrating others—even our enemies—is a denial of our common humanity. We acknowledge that we have failed to live compassionately and that some have even increased the sum of human misery in the name of religion.

We therefore call upon all men and women ~ to restore compassion to the centre of morality and religion ~ to return to the ancient principle that any interpretation of scripture that breeds violence, hatred or disdain is illegitimate ~ to ensure that youth are given accurate and respectful information about other traditions, religions and cultures ~ to encourage a positive appreciation of cultural and religious diversity ~ to cultivate an informed empathy with the suffering of all human beings—even those regarded as enemies.

We urgently need to make compassion a clear, luminous and dynamic force in our polarized world. Rooted in a principled determination to transcend selfishness, compassion can break down political, dogmatic, ideological and religious boundaries. Born of our deep interdependence, compassion is essential to human relationships and to a fulfilled humanity. It is the path to enlightenment, and indispensible to the creation of a just economy and a peaceful global community.

Today [12 Nov 2009] marks the official launch of the Charter for Compassion. The Charter is the result of Karen Armstrong’s 2008 TED (Technology, Entertainment, Design) Prize wish. TED is an annual conference which brings together the world’s most fascinating thinkers and doers, who are challenged to give the talk of their lives (in 18 minutes).The TED Prize is awarded annually to three exceptional individuals who each receive $100,000 and the granting of “One Wish to Change the World.” In a world where religion is often seen as a way to divide us, 2008 TED Prize winner Karen Armstrong will remind us today that religion can be a force to unite us. Karen Armstrong’s TED Prize wish to change the world emphasizes that the core beliefs in all religions point squarely to the Golden Rule—do unto others as you would have them do unto you. This idea to deliberately live your life with compassion for others has been embraced by people around the world who, led by Karen, contributed their thoughts on compassion to a document that evolved into the Charter For Compassion.
